Romance and Rambles! Some Suggestions…..

Tour the picturesque Kylemore Abbey & Romantic Walled Gardens
Tour the beautiful estate & gardens and learn all about the tragic love story of Mitchell Henry & his beloved wife Margaret; a story full of romance and sadness.
The estate had been bought and planned as an elaborate love token for Margaret and as a ‘nesting place’ for the growing Henry family.

Romantic Drives Galore

Connemara is packed full of driving routes and promises fabulous sea and countryside views around every turn. Take our suggested drive or make up your own route – either way there’s lots to see and loads of romantic photo opportunities too!

Suggestion: The North Route
This drive will begin and end in Clifden and will cover a large part of North Connemara. Start your drive by leaving the bustling market town of Clifden via the Sky Road. The Sky Road is one of the most picturesque areas in the Connemara region. The peninsula is also a part of the Wild Atlantic Way driving route. At the viewing point high up on the hill you will find unbeatable views of the Connemara countryside, the Atlantic Ocean, The Islands, and the coastline of Co. Mayo to the North, and Co. Clare to the south. Continue the route towards Claddaghduff, Omey Strand and on to Cleggan. It is worth exploring the area to experience the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and breath-taking seascapes. Omey Beach is an ideal stop off point for a romantic stroll to Omey Island which can be reached on foot at low tide. Follow the route on to Letterfrack where you will find the Connemara National Park. Enjoy any of the wonderful nature and walking trails, scenic mountains, expanses of bogs, heaths, grasslands and woodlands. Leaving Letterfrack, follow the N59 on to Kylemore Abbey. As well as the being an iconic building in a beautiful location, Kylemore Abbey is also home to the Sisters of the Benedictine Order, in Ireland, since 1920. Today it is still a working Abbey where the sisters live, work, pray and welcome visitors from around the world. Next stop is the Inagh Valley where you will be surrounded by breath-taking mountain and lake views. The valley separates the Twelve Bens from the Maamturk Mountains and its lakes, woodlands and hills are enjoyed by many walkers, fishermen and artists.
On your return route to Clifden town you will see Pine Island which lies within Derryclare Lough. This is a popular viewpoint for visitors to the area and a great place for photo opportunities. The lough is popular with fishermen for both salmon and trout.

Romantic Rambles

There is no better way to explore the countryside than to take in one of the many walking trails in the area. We have four suggestions for you here:
(i) Try the river walks at the stunning Ballynahinch Castle Hotel  & don’t miss The Fisherman’s Pub afterwards. Also, nearby is the recently completed 6km section of the Connemara Greenway – a pleasant stroll with the idyllic Connemara scenery.
(ii)Explore Dogs Bay, a horseshoe shaped bay with more than a mile-long stretch of white sandy beach. It backs on to Gurteen Bay, and together they form a tombolo which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean. This is an amazingly scenic area and a wonderful spot for a romantic stroll. Don’t forget to pop into Roundstone village after for a hot bowl of O’Dowds famous chowder!
(iii) Learn about the local heritage by visiting one of only sixteen special walks on the Wild Atlantic Way – the Derrigimlagh Discovery Point
(iv) Challenge yourself to the Lower Diamond walk or Upper Diamond Walk – both in the heart of Connemara National Park!
