Description Of The Area

Cong is a village straddling the borders of County Galway and County Mayo. It is a busy village, situated on an island formed by a number of streams that surround it on all sides between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask. This is a very busy tourist destination, whether to stay, or for a day trip. There is much to see and do in this area and it is steeped in heritage and history. Ashford Castle is located in Cong and is a huge tourist attraction due to it being the filming location for the famous movie “The Quiet Man” starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.

The many activities in the area include fishing, lake cruises, Quiet Man tours, canoeing, falconry, horse riding, golf, walking trails and cave exploring.

The village of Cong boasts a multitude of shops, crafts, bars and restaurants as well as all services that may be required. There are restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes, and a beautiful picnic area beside the river where you can feed the ducks and swans. No trip to Connemara is complete without experiencing a trip to Cong and its surrounds, its culture, history, heritage and magnificent scenery. It is an area you will remember fondly.
