Given its location on the shores of Lough Corrib, the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland, Oughterard is a prime fishing destination. Oughterard and Lough Corrib are renowned world-wide for its excellent game angling and there is also coarse fishing available on the nearby Ross Lake. Fishing is a way of life for many that live in the area as well as a favourite past time for many of its visitors. Fishermen visit from all over the world to try their hand at catching the Corrib’s plentiful salmon and trout. For your fishing equipment requirements, Tommy Tucks on Main Street are willing and able to get you sorted. For those of you who do not wish to fish the lakes, boat trips and cruises on Lough Corrib are available from the village pier.

Attractions and activities in the area include a candle making workshop, pony trekking,  a golf club, many heritage sites including Aughanure Castle and Leam Bridge, made famous in the film “The Quiet Man”.  Brigits Garden is close to Oughterard, a unique celtic themed garden with nature trails and play areas for all of the family to enjoy. On the Clifden road you can take a tour of Glengowla Mines, a historic 19th century silver and lead mine and Irelands only show mine.
