Description Of The Area

The village of Recess is located 13 miles from Clifden on the N59 Clifden to Galway Road. Here you will find a grocery store, the famous Joyces Craft Shop, a bar and a church. Within the village car park you will find “The Connemara Giant”, a 20th century stone giant.  Local lore tells us that if you touch the hand of the giant, you will be blessed with the knowledge of his ancient tribe. Many visitors to Connemara ensure that they visit the giant, it is a must see and do for visitors to the area.

Recess village is set amongst Glendalough Lake and Derryclare Lake, and nestled Lissoughter Mountain. The lake and mountain scenery is a sight to behold.

The nearby glaciated Inagh Valley is north of Recess and stretches towards Kylemore along Lough Inagh.  The valley itself separates the Twelve Bens from the Maamturk Mountains. The valley’s lake, woodlands and hills are enjoyed by many walkers, fishermen and artists. Lough Inagh is a well known game fishing lake and visitors are more than welcome to fish there. Boats can be hired locally.

Maumean, a holy place that has attracted pilgrims since the early Christian period is accessible from near Recess Church, and also from the Inagh Valley. Maumean is sometimes referred to as St Patrick’s Well or St. Patrick’s Bed and is located on a height of 320m in the Maamturk Mountains. Here you will find a mass rock and a pilgrimage to Maumean takes place annually.
